The UK driving licence is issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) on behalf of the UK government. To obtain a driving licence, applicants must meet certain eligibility criteria, including being at least 17 years old, having a valid identity, and passing a series of tests that assess their knowledge of the Highway Code and their ability to drive safely.

There are several types of UK driving licences, each with its own set of privileges and restrictions. A Category B licence, also known as a standard driving licence, is the most common type of licence and allows holders to drive cars, vans, and other light vehicles. Other categories of licences include Category A for motorbikes, Category C for large goods vehicles, and Category D for buses and coaches. The type of licence an individual holds determines the types of vehicles they are allowed to drive.

UK driving licences are divided into two parts: the photocard and the paper counterpart. The photocard contains the licence holder’s personal details, including their name, address, and date of birth, as well as a photograph and a unique licence number. The paper counterpart, which is being phased out, contains details of any endorsements or restrictions on the licence holder’s driving privileges. From 2015, paper licences were abolished for new applicants, and existing licence holders were encouraged to switch to a digital licence.
